Beleaguered goats Dashed early hopes Disgruntled cries Dejected sighs Butt of the jokes Against the ropes Elusive prize First half demise Midseason rise Plays synthesize Team harmonized (Victorious eyes) Midseason rise

Decisions weigh on your mind They numb your instincts, break your spine Hesitation leaves your hands tied Your bright future renders you blind You are a dear in headlights The fear is in your eyes You stare into uncertainty And feel paralyzed Heart races through the day Your breath shallow lost its way Dread fills you to the bone In consolation you’re not alone
3.
Photographs of you Etched in long-term memory Smiles and love abound Sorrow, fears no longer found Hot summer nights reviewed Coldest arguments eschewed Under lock and key My porous memory renews Destiny has dealt my life sentence Selective memory for you As I look at all of these precious Selected memories of you Left to wonder how in the world I Rejected you Now don’t get me wrong Default friendship makes me strong Wishing you the best I’ll get on in loneliness Rewritten history is Desert island company Under lock and key My porous memory renews Destiny has dealt my life sentence Selective memory for you Ponder as I look at these precious Selected memories of you What would I recall if I never Selected you

Earlybird 03:52
Early riser, keener than the day is long Sits atop his perch to sing the world his song With his young and immature voice cackling Confidently gives the song his everything Where did you go Early bird, Lost your dream? Jaded and old Too much learned Too much seen Feathers grey his voice is strong and shimmering Understands the world’s no longer listening Older, wiser, deeper than the day is long Sits alone and sings himself his favourite song Does not realize his voice is being heard By an audience of one young early bird

Have you seen the Montreal ballet Baring talents shamelessly Montreal ballet Night or day Montreal ballet Supple bodies on display Montreal ballet College boys Try in vain Cannot seem to look away Blushing as they pay Birthday suits Skin parade What would old Sainte Catherine say Turning in her grave On the Main Front and centre stage Buxom wishes entertained Images ingrained Now you see the Montreal ballet Dancing in your wildest dreams Montreal ballet

Don’t need to be the world’s greatest Just want to be Canada famous And if that seems overambitious Manitoba famous But in my dreams I’m Canada famous CBC, staple of the playlist Juno me I’m Canada famous And if that seems overambitious Manitoba famous But in my dreams I’m Canada famous

Sunlight shines on open wounds Exposing them to the world. Do not hide the bleeding. Sunshine is healing Hold your chin high. Take pride in your eternal vulnerability. The whole world bleeds Beautiful fragility
8.
My head is a music box A place of refuge For melody Notes twirl like ballerinas On my own private Grey matter stage Inner voices make A sonic mattress With sheets of sound Slip into bed, disappear And take my refuge From daily life
9.
I’ve been lost, I’ve been found hidin’ away Lookin’ for greener grass to pave my way I’ve been low and I’ve been high ridin’ the waves Searchin’ for greener grass to change my ways Shined an incandescent light into my soul Looked into the corners that I dared not go Shine a light, shed some tears, watch it grow That is how greener grass’ green will glow I’ve been here, I’ve been there wastin’ my time Waitin’ for greener grass to change my mind Been to Heaven, been to Hell and in between Prayin’ that greener grass fills my dreams
10.
Ungodly hour of morning While dad’s asleep and snoring The hockey mom amazes That’s why I sing her praises Her heart is warm with coffee She cheers from bleachers frosty A pro with giant laces That’s why I sing her praises Eternal helping hand Maternal die-hard fan The sight of blood unfazes Gives post-game pop and raisons She wipes tears from young faces That’s why we sing her praises

Sunday Jog 03:52
Donning unblemished Nike I face the bright Midday sun Ear buds pump shuffle play I’m on my way For a run My feet have left the ground My heartbeat pounds A Sunday jog A weekend on the town Has turned me upside down The sober pace I’ve found Will turn me back around Dry mouth, hung over eyes Your stares surmise Weekend sin Sweat drips down unshaved face Evacuates Wine and gin
12.
Do I hear happiness here? Is this singing that I hear? What are all of these cheerful sounds? Can’t you see that I’m feeling down? Hey kids, don’t you dare change my mood I’m quite happy to sit and brood Do I hear happiness here? Winsome voices disappear
13.
Sleeplessness When I close my eyes Sleeplessness Playing with my mind Tossing, turning Slumber yearning Restlessness When I see the time Restlessness From the daily grind Made a mountain of Sheep I’ve counted Loneliness Solitary bed Loneliness Echoes in my head World is sleeping Morning creeping

about

MIDSEASON is Karl Jannuska's fifth CD as a leader and is comprised entirely of his original music and lyrics interpreted beautifully by two of Canada's most talented vocalists: Sienna Dahlen and Denzal Sinclaire. While Karl is often considered a "jazz" drummer, the music on Midseason leans more towards alternative indie pop and combines his unique drum grooves with catchy melodies.
